#PBA2015 Govs Cup Roundup: June 9, 2015

The Alaska Aces and San Miguel Beermen remained at the top tier of the standings after earning separate wins tonight in the 2015 PBA Govs’ Cup. The Aces used a strong finishing kick to dispose of the Meralco Bolts, while the Beermen had to battle back from 17 points down to thwart the Tropang Texters.

The Alaska Aces kept the leaders within sight after picking up a crucial victory over Meralco, 89-75, clinching their sixth win in eight games in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Import Romeo Travis posted team-highs of 24 points, 18 rebounds, and 4 assists to pace the Aces. Jvee Casio added 11 points and 4 assists, while Chris Banchero scored 10.


Alaska (6-2) tied streaking San Miguel for second place in the standings, half a game behind No. 1 Barako Bull, which has a league-best 6-1 record.

The Aces closed the game out strong, going on an 18-3 run in the fourth quarter to turn a one-point lead into a whopping 16-point advantage, 89-73, with 56.4 seconds left in the game.

Import Andre Emmett led Meralco with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Hodge added 12 and 8 for the Bolts, who dropped to 4-4.

Romeo Travis and the Aces buckled down to beat the Bolts. Alaska remained within reach of first place.

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN over TALK N TEXT TROPANG TEXTERS, 101-96

Not even the PBA Commissioner’s Cup champions Talk ‘N Text had enough to slow down the San Miguel juggernaut as the Beermen rolled to a seventh consecutive win, 101-96, on Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

San Miguel, the Philippine Cup champions, came back from 17 points down in the first half before leading by as many as 11 in the fourth quarter in a big turnaround.

Import Arizona Reid led the way with 29 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Marcio Lassiter added 15 points for the Beermen, who improved to 7-2 in the Governors’ Cup, trailing only Barako Bull (6-1).

Arwind Santos added 14 points and 8 assists, while Alex Cabagnot added 11 and Ronald Tubid chipped in with 10.

Gilas Pilipinas star guard Jayson Castro scored 25 points to lead Talk ‘N Text, while import Steffphon Pettigrew had 17 markers in support.

AZ Reid led a furious fightback from the Beermen to pull the rug from under the Texters.
