#PBA2015 Philippine Cup Roundup: November 29-30, 2014

2014-2015 PBA Philippine Cup action hit fever pitch this past weekend, with Talk N Text beating Blackwater in Laguna, GlobalPort upsetting Ginebra, and Rain or Shine outlasting Purefoods!           

TY Tang, Terrence Romeo, and Jayson Castro all dropped big games to tow their
respective teams to victory this weekend.

A balanced Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters side took care of business against expansion team Blackwater, 90-80, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna. Jayson Castro led the way for Talk ‘N Text, now at 6-3, with 21 points. He got to the free throw line at will against Blackwater, shooting 11-for-15 from the stripe. It was a strong team effort for the Tropang Texters, though. Rob Reyes was the only other Texter to reach double-figures with 10 points, but five other players scored between nine and seven points in the victory. Blackwater, which was paced by 22 points and 13 rebounds from Bryan Faundo, lost a 10th consecutive game in the conference.

The GlobalPort Batang Pier gave interim coach Eric Gonzales a big victory in his debut as they pounded struggling Barangay Ginebra, 98-77, at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum. Terrence Romeo was back in deadly form, scoring 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting, as GlobalPort leveled its PBA Philippine Cup win-loss record to an even 5-5. Rookie Anthony Semerad added 17 points, 12 of them in the second half, while Alex Cabagnot contributed 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists in a well-rounded effort for the Batang Pier. They survived a big showing from Ginebra’s Greg Slaughter, who had 21 points and 15 rebounds in the loss – the third consecutive for the Kings. Japeth Aguilar also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Ginebra, meanwhile, dropped down to 5-4. GlobalPort shot 18-for-39 from the field (46.2%) compared to just 9-for-37 (24.3%) for Ginebra. They also shot 6-for-13 (46.2%) from three with the Kings shooting just 2-for-13 (15.4%).

Terrence Romeo popped the cap again, draining 25 points as GlobalPort upset Ginebra.

The Rain or Shine bench took center stage in the clutch, and the reserves made big plays to lift the Elasto-Painters past Purefoods, 83-74, and extend their winning streak in the PBA Philippine Cup. Paul Lee lead the team in scoring with 18 points, but it was Gabe Norwood (11 points), TY Tang (11) and Jonathan Uyloan (9) making all the big plays down the stretch as Rain or Shine picked up a fifth consecutive win to improve to 7-2 for the season. They also ended Purefoods’ own four-game win streak coming into the game. The Hotshots dropped to 5-4 after the defeat. The Elasto Painters led by double figures in the fourth quarter but saw their advantage dwindle down to just three, 75-72, late in the game following a dizzying 18-6 run by the Hotshots. Tang, who had nasty spill earlier in the period, missed on a drive down the baseline but grabbed his own miss and put it back to make it a five-point game. After a couple of defensive stops, Uyloan came up big with a three-pointer that made it 80-72 with 1:50 remaining. Purefoods’ Joe Devance hit a basket to cut their deficit down to six, 80-74, but Norwood sealed the game by finishing on a transition basket plus an extra free throw after getting fouled with just 49 ticks left on the clock. Alex Mallari came off he pine to pace the Hotshots with a dozen markers, while James Yap and Devance dropped 11 and 10 respectively.

Line of the Game: Paul Lee - 18 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 triples.
