The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: June 9, 2012 Notes, Scores and Photos

Ray Parks and the NU Bulldogs look mighty invincible
as the preseason for collegiate hoops winds up.
- San Beda and Letran, two of the oldest rivals in Philippine amateur basketball, arranged a showdown for the 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup Juniors crown after disposing of the NU Bullpups and the Xavier Golden Stallions respectively.
- RP-Youth standouts Josh Caracut and Arvin Tolentino spearheaded the attack of San Beda, combining for 33 points and 11 rebounds. Caracut also displayed his deadly shooting form, making 5 of his 8 attempts from beyond the arc. Javee Mocon continued to be a consistent stat-muncher, scoring 15 markers and grabbing 11 boards for the Red Cubs. Raph Atangan led NU with 19 points to go along with 9 rebounds and 3 assists, but his team was plagued by an atrocious 34% shooting clip from the floor. They also got pounded on the glass (53-38) and only managed 11 assists compared to 22 for the Bedans.

- The second game of the day was a virtual shootout between Letran’s Rey Nambatac and Xavier’s Kyles Lao, with Nambatac netting 30 points to pace the Squires and Lao ending up with a tournament-high 43 to lead the Stallions. Nambatac, however, had a bit more help, with Ivan Villanueva and Bong Quinto pairing up for 41 points and a herculean 31 rebounds. In contrast, Jarrell Radley Lim was the only other Xaverian in double-figures with 12 markers. Letran shot just 39% from the field, but they more than made up for it by outrebounding the taller Xavier boys, 52-48. They also distributed the ball much better, producing 19 dimes to Xavier’s 11. All the Squires also scored at least 2 points. Xavier’s promising big guy, Isaac Go, was limited to just 2 points on 1-of-5 shooting and only 5 rebounds in 31 minutes on the floor. Nambatac flirted with a triple-double, adding 10 boards and 7 assists to his stat-line.
- It was a pair of surprising results as Ateneo and San Beda, both MVP-supported teams, were booted out of the semifinals in the Seniors Division. This arranged an unexpected Championship clash between the vastly-improved NU Bulldogs and the new-look DLSU Green Archers.
- Ray Parks produced LeBron-esque numbers in leading the Henry Sy-backed Bulldogs to thoroughly demolish the five-peat-seeking Blue Eagles. Parks filled up the stat-sheet with 30 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block to further underscore his status as one of the most promising young talents in the country. Jeoff Javillonar, Denice Villamor, and Emmanuel Mbe all scored in twin digits to support Parks, who is the current overall statistical leader in the preseason tourney. So dominant was NU that they constantly built on their lead as the minutes passed by, negating any hope of a big Blue & White comeback. The Bulldogs shot a blistering 61% from the 2-point area, while limiting the Eagles to just 41% overall. Greg Slaughter and Nico Salva led Ateneo’s losing effort with 21 and 14 points respectively.
- The most surprising result of the day was La Salle beating erstwhile undefeated San Beda in a low-scoring tiff. After scoring 17 points in each of his last two outings, DLSU’s Jeron Teng finished with a pedestrian 5 points on 2-of-7 shooting in this game, but coach Gee Abanilla didn’t really need a lot from him as Norbert Torres dominated the interior with another double-double performance. Torres ended up with 12 points and 10 rebounds, outplaying his much more hyped counterpart from Mendiola, Ola Adeogun, who scored just 7 points and collared just 6 caroms. It was an uncharacteristically low-scoring affair for both teams, with La Salle’s 16-point first quarter output being the most in any period throughout the match. Key for the Archers was their relatively good FT shooting. This is one of the things in which La Salle usually struggles, but they did well in this game, making 14 of their 18 charity attempts.
