Speeding Bullets:
- The Junior Maroons unleashed quite the surprise, upsetting last year’s Juniors finalists, the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws. Diego Dario continued to sizzle for UPIS, scoring 18 points on the strength of 3 triples. Raymart Sablan impressed again with 15 markers and 12 caroms to his name. The Baby Tams clearly miss the services of last season’s ace, Jerie Pingoy. Without him, it seemed FEU just couldn’t find the lift to get past the vastly improved UPIS five.
- San Beda wasted no time in ransacking the Junior Altas. The Red Cubs uncorked a 32-point first quarter and just coasted to the major blowout. Javee Mocon and Ryan Gumtang both produced double-doubles for the Bedans, who also had 7 guys scoring in double digits. Looks like this coming season will be the Cubs’ playground again.
- Xavier relied on their dynamic duo of Kyles Lao and Jarrell Lim to upend the Greenies, who were the toasts of last season’s NCAA juniors tourney after barging into the Finals via the backdoor. They weren’t able to conjure the same magic against the determined Stallions,
though. Lao and Lim paired up for 45 of Xavier’s 53 points, far outscoring the entire starting unit of LSGH, which produced just 32 markers. LSGH big man Andre Paras also found the going tough underneath as he was matched up with 6’6 behemoth Isaac Go. Paras finished with just 4 points on 2-of-9 shooting.
- The Tamaraws got their 2nd win in a row, beating the Falcons in a tight encounter that may be a harbinger of things to come when these two teams meet again in the UAAP. Thought they were outrebounded, the Tamaraws showed poise, forcing more turnovers from the Falcons, and limiting the Adamson quintet to just 34% FG shooting. Coach Leo Austria’s boys also floundered at the stripe, where they converted a dismal 44% of their 27 tries. Anthony Hargrove finally broke into double digits for FEU with 12 points in just 14 minutes of play. He fouled out, however, and grabbed just 2 rebounds while patrolling the shaded lane.
- The Green Archers drew level in their win-loss slate by beating the Knights. Rookie Jeron Teng wound up leading DLSU with 15 points, though he shot just 3-of-11 from the floor. Both Yutien Andrada and Norbert Torres finished with double-doubles, combining for 25 points and 20 boards. This bodes well for the La Salle frontline, as there seems to be no sign of Arnold Van Opstal at least until the UAAP wars officially begin. The Archers also shot well from the field, connecting on 53% of their field goals, though they kinda balanced it out with a woeful 56% clip from the line, and by committing 17 turnovers.
